Police and firefighter compensation bill wins final passage in the House of Representatives

Police officers in the State of Connecticut and paid firefighters who suffer severe injuries while on duty could be eligible for full pay after their workers’ compensation runs out after a new bill received final legislative approval in the House of Representatives on Wednesday. Supporters of Norwalk Police Officer Phillip Rosselle advocated for the bill to be passed after Rosselle was shot and seriously injured in a freak training accident and has been unable to work since his injury.

"With this bill, we would lookout for those who look out for us,'' said Senate Majority Leader Bob Duff of Norwalk, a sponsor of the measure. “It is only fair that we pay police officers and firefighters their full salary when they are out on disability.”

But the Connecticut Conference of Municipalities opposes the bill since they believe it is an unfunded mandate on the towns and cities that will lead to more debt for the state its cities.

Rep. Doug Dubitsky, a Republican who represents seven towns oppose the bill stating, "This bill, while well-intentioned, segregates out a very small section of firefighters,'' Dubitsky said. "Once a firefighter, whether paid or volunteer, has been injured, has been crippled, has been put in a situation where they can no longer be a firefighter, they’re exactly the same.''

Why You Should Hire a Workers’ Compensation Lawyer

Although workers’ compensation law is designed to provide injured workers with immediate medical attention, care, and compensation, many claims are often denied. The reasons for this vary—from an individual not doing his or her part in filing the claim or to attempting to commit fraud.

However, one way to ensure that you receive the immediate benefits to which you are entitled is to file for benefits correctly the first time. And in order to ensure this, consider working with an experienced and reputable workers’ compensation attorney from The Law Offices of James A. Welcome. The legal team at The Law Offices of James A. Welcome stands by clients and fights for their rights throughout the stages of a workers’ compensation claim.
