Immigration Reform: Somebody Has To Step Up

Posted on 09/07/13

These last few weeks have been a time of serious uncertainty regarding what, if anything, will be done to reform our nation’s immigration laws. There are many good ideas out there–on both sides of the aisle. However, if nothing gets done the president needs to step up and do something real soon because the current immigration system is a disgrace. Each ICE local office is its own little fiefdom with little to no oversight on decisions made by its agents and attorneys. Random decisions to deport certain people while keeping others here. Decisions to detain certain people some weeks because the immigration detention centers have more available beds for that particular week while ignoring the merits of a person’s appeal to be released while a case is being pursued to live in the U.S. legally. Blatant disregard for the directives given to these local offices from the superiors in Washington. Not even immigration lawyers can answer this question: who is really in charge of this agency?

Read here for more on the likelihood that President Obama could provide a halt to all deportations this fall if there is nothing done by Congress to reform the nation’s immigration laws.
